A human chain and rally of independent Ebtedayi madrasa teachers have been held in Lakshmipur demanding salary allowances at the national scale.
On Wednesday (November 16) afternoon, teachers formed a human chain in front of the Lakshmipur Deputy Commissioner's office. After the human chain, a memorandum was submitted to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner.
The teachers' rally and human chain was addressed by Maulana Abdur Rahim, President of the Lakshmipur District Branch of the Bangladesh Independent Ebtedayi Madrasa Teachers' Association, General Secretary Mohammad Saifullah Helal, teachers Md. Murad Hossain, Abul Kalam Azad, Nizam Uddin, teachers Rehana Akhter and Nepi Rani Das, among others.
Speakers at the rally said that 26,645 teachers from 5,329 madrasas in the country have been living inhumane lives for the past 29 years, deprived of their salaries and allowances. They strongly demanded that the government provide them on a national scale by next December.
Incidentally, the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board registered 19,000 independent Ebtedayi madrasas in 1984. In the same circular, the government in 1994 fixed an allowance of 500 taka for teachers of all registered primary schools and independent Ebtedayi madrasas in the country. Then in 2013, it nationalized 26,193 private primary schools. In the same year, it increased the allowance of 1,519 independent Ebtedayi madrasa teachers from 500 taka to 1,000 taka. But 26,645 teachers of the remaining 5,329 madrasas have been living a life of human wages, deprived of salary allowance for the past 29 years.
