The government has issued a circular amending the quota system. The circular issued on Thursday signed by Public Administration Secretary Faiz Ahmad said that the existing quota system for direct recruitment to the posts of Grade IX (formerly Class I) and Grades 10 to 13 (formerly Class II) has been abolished. Henceforth recruitment will be done on merit basis.
While the quota system has been abolished in class I and II jobs, the quota system for class III and IV posts will remain as before.
So far 56 percent of posts in government jobs were reserved for various quotas. Among them, 30 percent for children of freedom fighters, 10 percent for women, 10 percent for district, 5 percent for minorities, 1 percent for disabled.
As mentioned in the circular, the government revised the quota system issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on March 17, 1997 for direct recruitment to all government departments, autonomous, semi-autonomous institutions and various corporations.
On September 17, the Quota Review Committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam submitted recommendations to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
