Preparatory meeting to protect mother hilsa in Kamalnagar

A preparatory meeting was held in Kamalnagar upazila of Lakshmipur to protect the mother hilsa of Meghna river during the breeding season. Several steps have been taken to increase Hilsa production.

Upazila Task Force Committee organized this meeting at Kamalnagar Upazila Parishad Auditorium at 3 pm on Thursday.

Kamalnagar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Ibrahim Hamid Shahin chaired the Task Force Committee President Kamalnagar Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Mollah.

Hazirhat Hamedia Fazil Degree Madrasa Principal Zayed Hossain Faruqi, Hazirhat Coast College Principal Abdul Motaleb, Upazila Freedom Fighter Commander Shafiq Uddin, Upazila Secondary Assistant Education Officer Md. Tauhidul Islam, Youth Development Officer. Monir Hossain, Char Kalkini UP Chairman Saif Ulla, Saheberhat UP Chairman Abul Khair, Falcon UP Chairman Harunur Rashid.

On this occasion, local dignitaries including National Fishermen's Association, Small Fishermen's Association, presidents of various fish ghats, general secretaries were present.

To create awareness among everyone including fishermen through leaflets, posters and miking to make the campaign to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season successful. Disconnect the power to the ice machine, prevent ice from coming in from somewhere else. Various measures including not allowing boats to leave the canals adjacent to the river, closing fuel oil shops for market boats and trawlers adjacent to fish ghats, and closing char fish ghats in the middle of the river.

Hilsa breeding season is 22 days from October 12 to November 2. Meanwhile, the government has banned all fishing, including hilsa, from Chandpur's Shatanal to Lakshmipur's Ramgati Meghna river in the hilsa breeding area. Fishing, transporting, stocking, marketing or selling fish cannot be done during this prohibited period. Violation of this law provides for a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 2 years in jail or fine and both.
