Cabinet approves proposal to abolish quota

The Cabinet has approved the proposal to remove quota system for entry to government jobs from Grades IX to 13 i.e. Grades I and II. This approval was given in the cabinet meeting on Wednesday. As a result, there is no quota system in first and second class government jobs.

After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam confirmed the matter to the media.

Earlier, the high-level committee formed to review the quota sent its recommendations to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On October 17, the report of the Quota Review Committee was sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Ministry of Public Administration. It was sent to the cabinet department there. The Cabinet Division tabled it in the Cabinet today.

Incidentally, currently 56 percent quota system is maintained in government jobs. Only 44 out of 100 people are getting jobs in merit quota.

Claiming discrimination, job seekers and students have been demanding cancellation of quota for a long time. In view of the ongoing agitation in educational institutions across the country, including Dhaka University, the Prime Minister announced in his address to the National Assembly on February 11 that 'there will be no shortage'. All recruitment will be based on merit.
