Kamalnagar Upazila is disappearing due to severe erosion of Pramatta Meghna. If proper measures are not taken to prevent erosion, this upazila will soon disappear from the map. Already 9 wards have completely disappeared under the river. Sahiber Hat, Taltali Bazar and Hajiganj Bazar of Saheber Hat Union, Makkala Bazar of Patarihat Union, Ludhua Bazar of Falkon Union have disappeared. In addition, 15 primary schools, 3 secondary schools and 2 madrasas and many small and large establishments have been submerged under Meghna.
About 54 rivers coming from upstream along with Padma Meghna Yamuna travel all over the country under different names and finally named Meghna through Chandpur district and fall into the Bay of Bengal through Raipur, Lakshmipur Sadar, Kamalnagar and Ramgati upazilas of Laxmipur district. Millions of tons of silt and sand brought from the Meghna upstream have deposited in this estuary due to which the main channel of water movement has been filled and numerous divers and degachars have been born there. So the river is rushing towards the town at high speed. The erosion of Meghna in Kamalnagar section is about 11 km. throughout One of them is Ludhuja Bazar area of Falkon Union and Matbarhat area of Saheberhat Union.
Locals said that the Hon'ble Prime Minister has allocated 198 crore taka for 2 upazilas for the purpose of damming the banks of Meghna. But in Ramgati part by the army 4 km. Although the work has been completed, the work of Kamalnagar has not yet started due to an unknown reason.
The upazila Sadar is under threat due to continuous erosion of Meghna in 3 Unions of Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur. Apart from this, 400 families have lost their houses and taken refuge in various places including the embankment due to the collapse of the river in the last one month. Due to rains and tides in the last one week, Meghna's breach has taken a dire shape. Kamalnagar Upazila is two kilometers away from Sadar river. This upazila headquarters is under extreme threat. Apart from this, the government has not taken any measures to prevent river erosion in the last seven years, causing extreme anger and frustration among the local residents.
According to the Kamalnagar Upazila Land and Water Development Board, Meghna's 15 km stretch from Patwari's Hat to Charkalkini has reached a critical level. In the last one month, 450 families in Charjagabandhu village, West Charfalkon village, South Charkalkini have taken shelter in various houses in neighboring villages along with Beri Dam due to river erosion.
In the last 7 years, continuous destruction of Meghna has been seen in Qadir Panditerhat High School, Taltali High School, Matabbarhat Darussunnah Alim Madrasa, Sahiber Hat Dakhil Madrasa, Matirhat Government Primary School, South West Jhar Jagabandhu Government Primary School, Madhyachar Jagabandhu Government Primary School, U. : P: Char Jagabandhu S: P: B: , Kalkini S: P: B: Dakshin Kalkini B: S: Primary School is dissolved in river pride. In addition, 50,000 acres of cropland, 7 cyclone shelters and 20 kilometers of unpaved roads were lost in the river. Char Falkon High School, Char Falkon Siddiquiya Dakhil Madrasa, Ludhua Bazar Jame Masjid, Ludhua Bazar, Saheberhat Primary School, Forkaniya Madrasa, Pazal Bari Jame Masjid are on the way of destruction.
Rahim Ullah (55), a victim of the river collapse, said in a tearful voice that there were 5 acres of land, four sons and one daughter, and I was happy with my wife. I used to catch fish in the river to support my family. Last 20 days Meghna took away her last sambal. Now I have taken shelter in someone else's house in Charfalcon.
It has been seen that Siraj, Mahijal, Hanif, Bashir, Bashar, Noor Nabi, Abdul Latif, Mustafa, Siddique, Abu Taher have lost their homes in one month. The same picture was seen in Meghna Par Charkalkini, South Char Lawrence, Char Jagbandhu West Char Falkon village.
Abul Khair, Chairman of Saheberhat Union, said that during the current monsoon, 300 families of Charjagabandhu and Matbar Nagar areas of his union were victims of river erosion.
Chairman of Charkalkini Union Mohammad Saifulya said that 100 families of Char Kalkini and South Char Lawrence villages have left the area due to river erosion during the monsoon season.
Laxmipur-4 (Ramgatti-Kamalnagar) Constituency MP Abdulyah Al Mamun said that hundreds of people have lost their homes due to the collapse of the Meghna. A Rs 200 crore anti-erosion project of about 4 km at Ramgatti: Work has already been completed and will begin soon at Kamalnagar.
