Students Demand Action against AL Party Notorious Lady Activist and Son

Bangladesh's student groups are increasing pressure on law enforcement to take action against MST. Aklima (Begum) Khatun, and her son, Humayun Kabir, both accused of violent suppression of opposition activists during Sheikh Hasina’s time in power. Begum, her nickname, is an influential Awami League activist, has been widely criticised for her role in organising violent crackdowns on peaceful opposition demonstrations.

As part of a nationwide movement to bring justice to those oppressed during Sheikh Hasina’s regime, students are leading the charge in calling for the arrest of all individuals responsible for the violence. The student groups, who were instrumental in organising the Quota Movement that led to Sheikh Hasina’s ousting, are now determined to see those who acted as enforcers of the regime's violence brought to justice. They have been vocal in demanding public cooperation to track down Aklima Khatun and her son, believing that their apprehension will symbolise a step toward ending political violence in Bangladesh.

“The people of Bangladesh deserve justice, and those who carried out violent acts in the name of political power should be held accountable,” said one student activist. "Aklima Begum and her son must be brought to law for their crimes."
