The Asia Cup cricket tournament is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka at the end of August. Even though the tournament has come to an end, the host of the event has not been finalized yet. Among them, the positions of Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) are different regarding the organization of Asia Cup.
After the full series against Australia, Sri Lanka hosts the Test series against Pakistan. However, the venue of the Test had to be changed at the last minute due to political unrest. That instability is making the fate of the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka uncertain.
A member of the ACC said to the media Cricbuzz about the matter, it does not seem right to organize the Asia Cup in this situation of the country. An official of the Lankan board said that there is a strong possibility that the Asia Cup will be moved.
Citing sources, Cricbuzz reported that various member countries of the ACC have started discussions about moving this 16-day tournament from Sri Lanka. Talks are also underway with the United Arab Emirates Cricket Board about organizing the tournament. However, the Lankan board is still optimistic about hosting the tournament.
On the other hand, the PCB has taken a stand against the removal of the Asia Cup from Sri Lanka. The PCB CEO said, 'First we want Sri Lanka to stay and want them to host the Asia Cup. If the tournament is not in Sri Lanka, they will face a lot of loss financially and cricket wise. Moreover, they organized the Australia series smoothly.
PCB said they are monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka. If Sri Lanka can organize the series against Pakistan well. If the situation is under control, the PCB does not see any problem with holding the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Besides, the PCB also mentioned that the next edition of the 50-over Asia Cup will be held in Pakistan.
