Onion and potato prices have increased due to flood and supply shortage. In the last three days, the price of onion has increased by Tk 10 per kg. And potato has increased by 5 rupees per kg.
On Thursday night, domestic onion was sold at the price of Tk 50 per kg in Karwan Bazar of the capital. Which was 40 rupees two years ago. However, Indian onion was not seen in the market due to stop of import. Apart from this, potatoes are being sold at Tk 30 per kg. But three days ago, a kg of potato was 24 to 25 Tk.
Anwar Hossain, onion seller of Karwan Bazar, said onion import from India has stopped. In addition, the northern region was swept away by floods. Due to this, the price has increased at the wholesale level. Due to this, prices have also increased in the retail market.
And potato trader Saiful Alam said that the supply of potatoes has decreased in the market. Due to this, the price has been increasing for a week. In the last three-four days it has increased step by step and now it is being sold at the rate of Tk 30 per kg.
But the buyers say that the government has stopped importing onion from India to ensure fair price to the farmers. But using this opportunity, the traders are cutting the pockets of the consumers.
On Thursday night, a buyer named Amir Hossain bought 5 kg onions from Karwan Bazar. Expressing anger, he said that now there is enough supply of onion in the country. Still, the traders hiked the prices without any reason.
