The water of Kushiara river in Moulvibazar section is now stable. However, the water does not stop the inflow of the river bank dam overflowing the locality. As a result, the number of people stuck in water in the district is increasing every day. At least 25,000 families in Fatepur and Uttarbhag Unions of Rajnagar Upazila have become waterlogged.
From last Friday, water started entering the locality from Kushiara, which overflowed the dam by the side of the mosque in Brahmangram and Sherpur Naubandar area of Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila. After that water started entering various villages including Nabubasti, Brahmangram, Sherpur Bazar, Daudpur, Ainpur through several more points.
Water continues to enter the area. Various areas are being flooded again. As the ground floor of Azad Bakht School and College and Daudpur Government Primary School, shelters in this area, are flooded, around two hundred families sheltered on the second and third floors are in a water-locked state.
Meanwhile, the relief materials are not reaching the people of the flood-affected areas properly. As a result, the burning sensation of hunger is increasing, the moaning is increasing. Local public representatives are not able to give relief to half of the people who have suffered with government assistance. This has caused anger among the Banvasis.
Raju Ahmad, organizing secretary of Sadar Upazila Swachhasevak League, said that at least one thousand Banvasi families of Khalilpur Union Ward No. 1 and No. 2 are eligible for relief. Among them, 480 families have been given 10 kg of rice.
Khalilpur UP Chairman of Sadar Upazila Abu Mia Chowdhury said that 8 tons of rice has been allocated from the Upazila Parishad and relief has been distributed to the three flood-affected wards on priority.
According to the district administration sources, 40 thousand families of 42 unions of 7 upazilas of the district are waterlogged. Two hundred and twenty thousand people of these families have either stayed in shelters, or are living in their relatives' houses or in their own houses. 101 shelters have been opened in the district. 24 thousand homeless people have taken shelter in these shelters. Apart from this, 1500 cattle have been accommodated in the shelter.
Nakul Chandra Das, chairman of Fatepur UP of Rajnagar upazila, said that 2500 families of at least 12 villages of this union are fighting with water.
Deputy Commissioner Mir Nahid Ahsan said that the flood situation in Sadar Upazila's Khalilpur, Manumukh, Akhaikunda, Rajnagar's Fatepur, Uttarbhag, Juri and Baralekha has not changed. As the water of Manu and Dhalai rivers decreases, the water in various areas of Rajnagar, Kulaura and Kamalganj is decreasing. Along with the relief operations, various teams of 60 medical teams are working in the flood-affected areas. 20,000 water purification tablets have been distributed among the Banvasi people through the members of the medical team and local public representatives.
Executive Engineer of Moulvibazar Water Development Board. Aktaruzzaman said, 'If the upstream flood subsides, the flood situation in our area will become normal.'
