A head-on collision between a Shatabdi passenger bus and an Econo bus in Lakshmipur has left Shatabdi Paribahan driver Milon dead and 10 other passengers injured.
The accident occurred in the Charchamita area of the Dhaka-Raipur highway early Friday morning. After the accident, all traffic on the route was closed for about two hours. Later, traffic resumed at around 9 am.
The deceased bus driver, Milon, hails from Bhola district. His body has been kept at the Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital morgue. The injured have been admitted to various clinics including Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.
Eyewitnesses and police said that a passenger bus named Shatabdi (Chatt Metro B-11-0389) bound for Chittagong, which left Khulna, reached Lakshmipur Uttar Temuhani area when its headlight was damaged. Later, disobeying the passengers' orders, the bus drove with torchlight in dense fog and when it reached Charchamita area of Dhaka-Raipur highway, it collided head-on with another passenger bus named Econo (Dhaka Metro B-14-8034) coming from the opposite direction. The driver of Shatabdi Paribahan was killed on the spot. At least 10 passengers of both buses were injured.
Among the injured, Faruk Hossain, Mamunur Rashid, Sumon, Shahjalal and Sohel have been admitted to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. The other injured have been admitted to various clinics.
Chandraganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abdul Malek confirmed the incident.
