14 rescued; 5 militants arrested, situation under control

Dhaka: An unprecedented attack by gunmen has taken place in the diplomatic area of Gulshan in the capital. Attackers entered a restaurant and took people hostage. Fourteen people have been rescued as of last reported after a frantic overnight operation. Apart from this, 5 militants have been arrested.

At least two police officers were killed in the attack. There has never been such a terrible incident of taking people hostage by entering a restaurant in the country. The injured have been admitted to CMH in the capital.

Eight armed men entered the restaurant named Holy Artisan Bakery on Road No. 79 of Gulshan 2 at around 8:30 pm yesterday. It was not possible to rescue the hostages even at half past midnight. To rescue them, a commando team consisting of Navy, RAB and Police prepares to raid the restaurant. According to the latest news, 14 people have been rescued and 5 militants have been arrested.

A resident of a house about 50 yards from the cafe, Holy Artisan Bakery, in the diplomatic neighborhood, said he could see sniper rifles with telescopes being fired from an almost empty building next door. Shots are also being fired from armored vehicles. A reporter from the intersection of the road number 79, where the bakery is located, said that he saw the fire service workers going towards the building with fire extinguishers.
