Meta said that these social media users, including journalists and rights activists, are being targeted indiscriminately to violate their privacy.
In a report, Facebook-owned company Meta said it had removed several companies from its platform, including two linked to Russia, one based in Israel and one based in China, as part of a crackdown on the group. These companies were accused of trying to steal personal information from Facebook and Instagram users. More than 100 Facebook and Instagram accounts linked to a Russian company called Avalanche have been deleted.
The US-based Meta group, which has more than a billion users worldwide, includes Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. As a result, Meta's warning has raised concerns among a large number of social media users.
"Our goal is to do everything we can to protect people. That's why we share a lot of information with everyone in the industry," Nathaniel Glaeser, Meta's head of security policy, told reporters.
