A mobile court has sentenced ten fishermen, including a leader of the Fishermen's Association, to two years in prison for defying the ban in the Meghna river in Lakshmipur.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate of Mobile Court Mohammad Nuruzzaman gave the sentence on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier, the local fisheries department, coast guard and executive magistrate raided the river from morning to 1 pm and arrested them. Meanwhile, 5 thousand meters of current net, 2 pieces of hilsa and a fishing trawler were seized.
Executive Magistrate. Nuruzzaman said that 10 fishermen were arrested and sentenced to 2 years without labor in various areas of the Meghna River in Sadar Upazila. During this time, the seized nets were burnt in the market area of Mozu Chowdhury and the fish were distributed to the local orphanage.

It should be noted that the government has banned all types of fishing in the river during the main breeding season from October 12 to November 2. Fishing, transportation, storage and marketing or sale of fish is prohibited during this time.
