A mobile court has sentenced ten fishermen, including a leader of the Fishermen's Association, to two years in prison for defying the ban in the Meghna river in Lakshmipur.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate of Mobile Court Mohammad Nuruzzaman gave the sentence on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier, the local fisheries department, coast guard and executive magistrate raided the river from morning to 1 pm and arrested them. Meanwhile, 5 thousand meters of current net, 2 pieces of hilsa and a fishing trawler were seized.
Executive Magistrate. Nuruzzaman said that 10 fishermen were arrested and sentenced to 2 years without labor in various areas of the Meghna River in Sadar Upazila. During this time, the seized nets were burnt in the market area of Mozu Chowdhury and the fish were distributed to the local orphanage.

Alauddin (38), son of deceased Altaf Hossain of Char Samchuddin village, Abu Taher (56), son of Lal Mia of Char Kalkini village, Mahi Uddin (26), son of deceased Ibrahim Khalil of Char Charmani village of Sadar Upazila, Alauddin (38), son of deceased Ibrahim Khalil of Char Charmani village, east of Noakhali. Rustum Ali's son. Mustafa (58), son of Syed Ahmed Hossain Ahmed (45), son of deceased Ruhul Amin. Siraj (52), son of Shahadat Hossain. Shahjahan (45), Shahjahan's son Monir Hossain (36), son of Idris Mia. Alauddin (28).
It should be noted that the government has banned all types of fishing in the river during the main breeding season from October 12 to November 2. Fishing, transportation, storage and marketing or sale of fish is prohibited during this time.
