Dhaka:
A lawyer has filed a petition in the High Court asking that it is mandatory to submit a medical certificate by checking the presence of thalassemia and drugs in the blood of the bride and groom before marriage.
On Thursday (July 5), advocate Eklach Uddin Bhuiyan on behalf of Supreme Court lawyer Syeda Shaheen Ara Laili filed this writ in the relevant branch of the High Court.
In the writ petition, the Cabinet Secretary, Law Secretary, Health Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Director General of Health Directorate and Director General of Narcotics Control Directorate have been made defendants.
According to the petition, experts have opined that if a person suffering from thalassemia marries a patient suffering from the same disease, the unborn child is likely to be handicapped. Besides, the number of drug addicts in the country is not less. Among them, the number of young people is high. If medical certificate (dope test certificate) is mandatory in clause 3 and 4 of the existing Nikah name along with the birth certificate of the bride and groom in clause 17, then the life of the future family and unborn child of the bride and groom can be saved.
