In Khulna, the lowest rainfall in April in 10 years, the durability of heatwaves has increased

In Khulna, the rainfall has decreased, and the temperature has increased and the persistence of heatstroke has increased. The maximum temperature recorded on Monday this year was 41.8 degrees Celsius, the highest in the last 25 years. Earlier, on April 25, the temperature was 41.5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, in the last 10 years, Khulna has recorded the lowest rainfall this April. This April, the rainfall is only 7 mm. Khulna Meteorological Office said this information on Monday.

According to Khulna Meteorological Office sources, the highest temperature recorded in Khulna this year on Monday was 41.8 degrees Celsius. And in the current month of April, the rainfall is only 7 mm. Last year on April 16, the maximum temperature was 41.3 degrees Celsius. However, last year the duration of heatstroke was less than this year. Last year in April it rained 34 mm. Earlier, in April 2000, the rainfall was 70 mm. The highest temperature in April that year was 38 degrees Celsius. And in April 2014, it rained 50 mm, the maximum temperature was 40.7 degrees Celsius.

The source said that although the temperature increased in the past years, the duration of the heatwave was short due to rains in a few days. Due to less rain in this month of April, the effect of heat is more.

In charge of Khulna Meteorological Office. Amirul Azad said, April is naturally hotter than other months of the year. However, the temperature in Khulna is increasing day by day and the duration of heatstroke has also increased. He said climate change and decrease in rainfall is one of the reasons for the burning. Besides, infrastructure has been created by filling many reservoirs in Khulna. Many rivers and canals have dried up. Besides, the heat has also increased due to the cutting of trees.

Khulna University Environmental Science Discipline Professor Dr. Abdullah Harun Chowdhury said that many reservoirs have been filled in Khulna. These water bodies absorbed the heat. Before there were many plants, they supplied oxygen and absorbed carbon dioxide. Now the amount of carbon-dioxide in the air has increased due to the reduction of vegetation. He said that the number and usage of AC has increased in Khulna compared to before. This is also a reason for the increase in temperature. Besides, salinity has increased in Khulna. Due to salinity, the air is more humid and saltier, so it feels hotter.
