In order to implement the program to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season, the government is providing rice at the rate of 20 kg as food assistance (VGF) to the fishing families. The river is the only source of livelihood for the fishermen. The fishermen are suffering from malnutrition due to not being able to catch fish. The program has ended, but the fishing families have not received even a handful of rice. The fishermen said that if we do not catch fish in the river during the campaign, the government will give us rice, but even after the campaign, we have not received any rice or assistance. We are struggling to survive and are starving.
According to the Upazila Fisheries Office, out of the 9 unions, 1st Charkalkini and 3rd Char Lawrence Union have submitted the list to the jail. The chairmen of 7th Hazir Hat, 5th Char Falkon, and 6th Patwari Hat unions said that they have not been able to prepare the list yet. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Masudur Rahman Molla said that DO was issued on October 23, they are not giving rice till now, I will take necessary steps in this regard.
