Lakshmipur from 'Lakshmi', another name for Soyland

Lakshmipur district is named after the word Lakshmi. Lakshmi means the goddess of wealth and fortune and Pur means city or town. As such, Lakshmipur generally means a city rich in wealth or a city of fortune. Maybe that is why 85 percent of the country's total soybean production is produced in this district. In that context, in 2016, Lakshmipur district administration identified soyabean as the district's brand or identity. Laxmipur district is newly known as 'Soyland or Laxmipur of Soybeans'.

According to Nazim Uddin Mahmud's famous book 'History and Heritage of Laxmipur District', there are differences in the naming of Laxmipur district. In the history of 'Rajmala or Tripura' written by historian Kailash Chandra Singh, there was a Mauza called 'Laxmipur'. Alternatively, Lakshmipur is named after the historical 'Lakshmidah Pargana'. Lakshmidah Pargana is mentioned in the history book written by the famous journalist and writer Sana Ullah Noori, who is a native of this district, called 'Suja Badsha Sadak'. Historical dr. Borah thought of Islamabad as Lakshmipur. Again, Mr. Suresh Chandranath Majumdar wrote in his research book 'Rajpurush Yogivansh', the name of the first male in the lineage of Raja Gaur Kishore Roy Chowdhury, the zamindar of Dalal Bazar, is Lakshmi Narayan Roy and the name of Raja Gaur Kishore's wife is Lakshmi Priya. Some historians believe that Lakshmipur was named after Lakshmi Narayan Roy or Lakshmi Priya.

During the Mughal and East India Company rule, there was a military establishment at Lakshmipur. From the 16th to the 19th century, large quantities of salt were produced and exported in this area. The salt revolution happened here because of the salt at that time. Mahatma Gandhi visited the region as the people of Lakshmipur spontaneously participated in the Swadeshi movement. He often stayed at Kafilatali Akhara in present Raipur Upazila and Srirampur Rajbari in Ramganj. National poet Nazrul Islam visited Lakshmipur in June 1926. In the great liberation war of 1971 in Lakshmipur, there were seventeen battles between the Pak-invader forces and the freedom fighters. Three monuments, two mass graves and a mass killing center were found in the area after independence.

Established in 1984, the district has 4 parliamentary constituencies, 5 upazilas, 4 municipalities, 58 union councils and about 536 villages. The 4 parliamentary constituencies are Laxmipur-01 (Ramganj), Laxmipur-02 (Raipur-Sadar partial), Laxmipur-03 (Sadar) and Laxmipur-04 (Ramgatti-Kamalnagar). A new municipality called Chandraganj is also under process. Apart from Meghna, there are several rivers and canals including Dakatiya, Kata Khali, Rahmat Khali and Bhulua. The area of the district is 1455.96 square kilometers, home to about 18 lakh people.

Among the well-known fruits in this area are mango, jackfruit, banana, papaya, guava, lemon, amra, jam and palm etc. Most of the people of this district are engaged in agriculture and fishing.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister AKM Shahjahan Kamal is the son of MP Laxmipur. He is the current MP of Laxmipur-03 constituency and a senior leader of Awami League. In 1973 in Bangabandhu's parliament, he was the MP of this constituency. About the history and tradition of Lakshmipur district, the minister said, Lakshmipur is a district located on the banks of Meghna river. It was once part of the greater Noakhali region.
