India has proposed to start another passenger train on the Dhaka-Kolkata route. Vikram Doraiswamy, the outgoing Indian High Commissioner appointed in Dhaka, met Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan on Monday and made this proposal.
The Ministry of Railways said in a press release that the ongoing project with Indian loans was discussed in the meeting between them at the Railway Building of the capital.
Doraiswamy said in the meeting that currently Maitri, Bandhan and Mithali Express trains are running between Bangladesh and India. Another train may be run via Darshana on Dhaka-Kolkata route considering the passenger demand.
In the meeting, the railway minister said that Bangladesh is interested in importing high-quality tourist coaches from India to run on the Dhaka-Cox's Bazar route. Chilahati-Haldibari railway line needs to be strengthened to establish rail connectivity with Nepal and Bhutan.
Apart from this, the Minister of Railways requested the country's ambassador to construct a new railway line from Panchagarh to Banglabandha and to quickly determine the place where the railway line will be connected from Banglabandha to the Indian part.
